February 15,2012- Cape Cod-Massive strandings of dolphins began  on Jan. 12 along the Cape Cod coast south of Boston, MA. The reason for the unusually large groups stranding themselves is currently unknown.

177 dolphins have stranded on Cape Cod since Jan. 12. Of those, 134 have died and 43 have been rescued.

That’s far more than the yearly average of 37 common dolphin strandings over the last 12 years.

The strandings began in early January from Barnstable to Wellfleet and more and more are stranding themselves each day. The strandings continue for the second straight month with still no concrete reason for them to be happening.
